AKASHREKHA

Project Concept

Every year, hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshis migrate to the Middle East, Europe, and other regions in search of better employment opportunities and improved livelihoods. Their remittances play a vital role in supporting families and contributing to the national economy. However, many aspiring migrant workers leave the country with limited knowledge of safe migration practices, labor rights, health protection, legal obligations, cultural norms, and support services available in destination countries.

In most cases, prospective migrants rely heavily on brokers, informal agents, relatives, friends, or peer networks for information and guidance. As a result, many become vulnerable to fraud, labor exploitation, contract substitution, wage theft, unsafe working conditions, legal complications, detention, and violations of their human rights. A lack of understanding of local laws, customs, and social expectations can also place migrants at risk of unintentionally violating regulations and facing serious legal consequences.

AKASHREKHA is a proposed awareness, preparedness, and capacity-building initiative of Mother Friends designed to promote safe, informed, and dignified migration for Bangladeshi workers. The name Akashrekha (Sky Horizon) symbolizes a safe pathway toward new opportunities, empowering migrants to navigate their journey beyond borders with knowledge, confidence, and security.

The program will deliver both online and in-person training, orientation sessions, and information services to equip migrant workers with practical knowledge and essential life skills before departure.
Key Areas of Support
• Safe and legal migration procedures
• Pre-departure preparation and documentation
• Workers’ rights and human rights awareness
• Laws, regulations, and cultural norms of destination countries
• Occupational health, personal safety, and mental well-being
• Financial literacy, savings, and remittance management
• Prevention of fraud, trafficking, and exploitation
• Access to embassies, consulates, and support services
• Emergency response and complaint mechanisms
• Family preparedness and communication strategies

The initiative also envisions the development of a digital information platform that will provide migrants with reliable, easy-to-understand information, resource directories, and referral pathways to support services both before and during migration.

Expected Outcomes

Through AKASHREKHA, migrant workers will become better informed, more confident, and better prepared to navigate the challenges of living and working abroad. The initiative aims to reduce migration-related risks, protect workers from exploitation, improve compliance with local laws and customs, strengthen access to health and support services, and enhance migrants’ ability to make informed decisions

By promoting safe and rights-based migration, the program will contribute to:
• Reduced cases of migration-related fraud and exploitation
• Improved health, safety, and well-being of migrant workers
• Greater awareness of legal rights and responsibilities
• Increased financial security and effective remittance management
• Stronger protection of human rights
• Enhanced social and economic contributions of migrant workers and their families

AKASHREKHA is not merely a training program. It is a comprehensive support system designed to help Bangladeshi migrant workers embark on their journey with awareness, dignity, confidence, and protection.
